How to Prepare for a Maternity Photoshoot: 7 Tips Every Mom-to-Be Should Know
Maternity photos are such a beautiful way to celebrate the incredible journey of motherhood. Whether this is your first baby or your fifth, documenting this chapter allows you to look back on the anticipation, love, and joy you felt before meeting your little one. To make sure your maternity session is smooth, relaxed, and full of beautiful memories, here are some helpful tips to prepare.
1. Book Your Session Early
The best time for maternity photos is typically between 28–34 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, your baby bump is round and visible, but you’re still comfortable enough to move around and pose. Scheduling early also ensures you’ll get the date you want.
2. Choose Outfits that Flatter Your Bump
Flowing gowns, fitted dresses, and soft fabrics photograph beautifully. Many photographers (including myself) offer a client wardrobe of maternity gowns so you don’t have to worry about shopping. You can also bring your own off course or do a mix of both options. As undergarment I recommend skin tone colors, best are strapless bra and thongs.
3. Consider Hair and Makeup
Professional hair and makeup can make you feel extra confident in front of the camera. Soft curls, glowing skin, and light touch-ups look amazing on camera and give your photos a polished finish.
4. Don’t Worry About “Little Imperfections”
Stretch marks, blemishes, or a bit of swelling are completely normal parts of pregnancy. Please don’t stress about them—my editing and retouching process ensures you’ll look and feel your best while still keeping your images natural and authentic. My goal is always to highlight your glow, not to change who you are. A light moisturizer is perfect to enhance skin tones and help the glow, please stay away from heavy oils since they stain the fabrics.
5. Don’t Forget the Details
Pamper yourself the day before your session! Treat yourself to a manicure, moisturize your skin, and drink plenty of water to keep your glow. Little details like neat nails and smooth skin truly make a difference in close-up shots.
6. Bring Your Partner and Family (if you’d like!)
Maternity sessions aren’t just about the bump—they’re about the love surrounding your growing family. Including your partner or older children adds connection and makes your gallery even more meaningful.
7. Relax and Trust the Process
It’s normal to feel nervous in front of the camera, but remember—this is a celebration of you and your baby! I’ll guide you through flattering poses, natural prompts, and elegant styling so you’ll feel comfortable every step of the way.
